Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and
abstinence. The law of fasting binds
those who have completed 18 years,
until the beginning of their 60th year;
the law of abstinence binds those who
are over 14 years of age. The minimum fasting requirements make most sense when they are combined with
prayer and almsgiving.
